I’m not the one to love girl groups or even listen to them first off. I guess since I’m a girl, I prefer to see half naked men pelvic thrusting. But what I’ve noticed (particularly from watching Dr. Feel Good) is that when girls do anything similar to that, they are immediately trashy. This post is entirely inspired by that double standard.
The Sexy Image: How many times do you see girl groups trying to pull off the sexy image? And receive generally positive comments afterwards? Watch this video below.
This is a rookie group, RaNia. With this, they show a lot of potential. But does everyone see it that way? Not at all. Some deem this as “too much”, slutty, or even trashy. Just because it’s girls dancing? Replace it the girls with guys. Does that make a differences, or make the video sexier or even seem more appropriate? I don’t know if it’s the way people think or the industry or even traditions but it seems to be more appropriate if guys show off the bodies than if girls even show a little skin. It’s totally a double standard. It’s time for people to break out of the norm.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that I’m using a DBSK song
The sexy in this case was supposedly too much and the song got banned for a while because of it’s “explicit/erotic” lyrics. I didn’t (and still don’t) see anything wrong with the lyrics. In a few performances, they changed, “I’ve got you under my skin” to “I’ve got you under my sky” which I thought was pretty useless. I honestly think that the song is only inappropriate if someone took it out of context which I’m guessing some did.
My point there is, when other people said Mirotic was technically “too sexy” the fans said otherwise. However if it was a girl group instead, there would be a different reaction. I think since it hasn’t been long since many people have seen the “Sexy Girl Image” that it is frowned upon when seen.
The Cute Image: I hate this. I can’t stand it. Why must 20 year old boys sing songs that five year old girls would sing to? This is probably the reason why I don’t listen to girl groups. They are to cutesy for me. And I’m starting to think it’s because it’s what is safe. The media and company know this works and has good results. But I mean after a while, doesn’t anyone get tired of it?
Boy group first. To me, this is a weak single for a rookie group. Yes I love this boys to death ( especially since they are so young!) but it’s just too cute. I can’t take them seriously. Especially with B1A4 and HITT looking so manly. I’m sure they’ll mature in the future. My take on the cute image? Safe but not original.
To be honest, I pick this song by random. Actually I used this chart.
I do know APINK is a rookie group. Just from the beat I knew it was one of those “look how cute I am” videos. I don’t have problem with it, but as I said before, it just gets boring after a while. I mean you need some versatility. I’m not saying give it up completely but at least try some other elements. And cute image for girls don’t appeal to me. The sexy image barely does.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I wish girl groups had more of an option to have a variety of looks. They can have their main theme but step out of the box every once in a while.
Thoughts?
