Recap: Hana Kimi 2011 Remake {Episode 3}

Sorry for the long wait!

So I figured I’ll have my recaps up on Thursdays just in case anyone is wondering. Episode 2 will be linked at the bottom of the post if you haven’t seen it or want to read my recap.

Episode 3 open with Mizuki walking slowly down the school. She seems to be in thought until Nakatsu and  Nakao interrupt her. (Isn’t Nishii so cuute?!) Nakao rambles about his lotion while Mizuki doesn’t even act like she’s paying attention. Nakatsu notices this and asks what’s wrong. Kayashima answers for her asking, technically saying, that Sano kissed her. Nakatsu spits his water out in shock (I tried to get this but it came out blurry.) while Nakao replies with the classic, “Is that all?”

He further explains saying Sano has kissed him before as well. Soon half the dorm (including Nakatsu) comes in saying the same thing. Kayshima explains how Sano becomes a kissing monster when he has alcohol in his system as they walk down the hall. They pass by Sano, dead asleep, and Mizuki can’t help but stare until Nakao pulls her away. Nakatsu walks by cursing Sano and smiles an evil grin. (Creepy…)

The next day the scene cuts to Mizuki entering her and Sano’s room. Sano is knocked out (again) and she tiptoes across the room until Sano suddenly sits up. She begins to explain herself saying she was at Nakao and just coming to get a change of clothes. Just as Mizuki was about to ask about yesterday, Sano lays back down.

Elsewhere in the cafeteria, students are picking out their events for the festival. Nakatsu is obviously still holding a grudge against Sano kissing Mizuki while he was drunk and is aiming a beam at Sano. Turns out Nakatsu, Sano, and Mizuki all have the cavalry battle.

Tennoji explains that the last event will be the 2,000 meter relay. Again the event must be explained to Mizuki. The event will be ran with five people from each dorm and those five people will be randomly picked. For dorm 2 the five people chosen are Mizuki, Nakatsu, Nanba, Sekime, and Noe. Dorm 2 cheers about their random selections. As Mizuki high fives everyone, she stops at Sano as she remembers the events from the previous night. Sano asks her what’s wrong but Mizuki says nothing and Sano goes on with his life.

The day of the event arrives and Mizuki is pumped. As she sprints across the field, others can’t help but notice how pumped she is. Nakatsu on the other hand still can’t get over the kiss Sano had with Mizuki. Mizuki finally runs back and as soon as they are about to start, the lovely Kagurazaka comes along. He shows Sano a flyer for a track meet and demands Sano does it. Sano refuses and Kagurazaka crumples up the flyer. He mutters a few words then storms off. Sano immediately leaves after him.

Meanwhile, the stalker Nakao is checking up on Nanba. He’s not alone though, he took Umeda (the nurse) with him. They wait outside a shopping center for a while before they see Nanba come out with flowers. It’s not surprising when immediately gives out flowers to some girls passing on the street, asking them to come to the festival. They swoon over him while Nakao’s jealousy kicks in. As he speaks sweet words into each girls’ ear, Nakao jumps in line and Nanba barely notices him. When he does he jumps back and Nakao tries to drag him away. However a girl calls out to him and they both stop. Nanba stares at her for a while until Nakao interrupts saying they were in the middle of shopping. Nanba hands the flowers to Nakao and walks away.

Umeda recognizes the girl as Kanako and greets her and she quickly walks off. Nakao begins to bug Umeda about the girl. Umeda reveals that Kanako was Nanba’s tutor and the two previously dated.

The camera cuts back to Dorm 2 setting up late at night. Nakatsu goes to help Mizuki and the two spot Sano at a distance. He is walking Yuujiro. Mizuki has a flashback to the time when he confessed to her that it’s not that he can’t jump, it’s that he won’t jump. Sano notices Mizuki staring and quickly turns back around.

On the walk home, Mizuki and Naktasu discuss Sano. She asks if there is anything they could do but Nakatsu explains that Sano is the type of person that likes to go at his own pace. Mizuki reflects on what Nakatsu says.

Inside, Nakatsu passes by the while Sano is examining his scar. Nakatsu walks in and Sano immediately drops his leg. As Nakatsu does laundry, he begins to talk about Sano taking his time with his jumping. Sano silently listens while Nakatsu continues to talk. He finally breaks out of his serious mood and starts to joke around about how terrible the laundry smells.

When Sano comes back from doing his own laundry, he surprises Mizuki and all her papers of his jumping fly from the book she was reading. She plays it off saying that she was looking stuff up for the battle. Unfortunately for her, one of the articles finds its way onto Sano bed and he picks it up. Before he can read all of it Mizuki snatches it out of his hands. Sano seems to be in a daze afterwards.

At night Mizuki sneaks out. She makes her way outside and she’s surprised to see Nakao. He opens up to her saying he’s a bit annoyed by Nanba’s flirting and he saw Nanba’s ex. He goes on saying he had never seen Nanba look so miserable. Finally he makes the confession of his love for Nanba but how unfortunate it is that Nanba won’t look at him. Mizuki counters saying that eventually his feelings will reach Nanba if he believes.

Nakao then comes up with the assumption that Mizuki must have someone she likes. She immediately denies it. He continues to press her about it before the scene ends and shifts to Sano.

In his room, Sano thinks back on his jumping days. He has a flashback about him jumping and the bar falling. He shifts to the article lying on the floor and stares at it in thought.

The second day of the festival has arrived! The teams run in with enthusiasm. The first event is the ball toss and Dorm 2 fails miserably leaving Dorm 1 to claim victory.

The next event is the Scavenger Hunt. Again, Dorm 2  just can’t measure up to the creative Dorm 3.

And no surprise, for the last event the St. Blossom girls make a special appearance. And not only them, Kanako makes appearance as well. Nanba sees her as he’s searching for his head band and the two step aside to talk for a while. Kanako admits that she didn’t intend on seeing Nanba but it was holding her back. Nanba calls her out for disappearing without a word. Soon enough as she starts to explain herself, Nakao and Mizuki almost walk right into their conversation but Mizuki stops them.

Kanako surprises them all by announcing that she is going to get married. Nanba’s eyes widen in shock and Nakao runs away. Nanba doesn’t know how to reply (I think I saw a tear.) and he walks away.

Mizuki runs after Nanba and hands him his headband. She makes sure to explain that Nakao decorated it. He notes how flashy it is then goes into a mini speech about cherishing the ones you love. He leaves Mizuki to think about his simple words while he runs off being his energitic self to pump of Dorm 2.

And finally the Cavalry battle begins. Sano walks up to Mizuki as if to offer a piece of advice but instead asks her if she wants to quit. Mizuki is still firm on doing it. Mizuki succeeds in taking one handband off before facing Tennoji. He ends of throwing Mizuki off balance and throwing her whole group on the ground.

The injuries appear to be minimal until the camera shifts to Nakatsu and he is grabbing at his ankle. The announcer announces the 2,000 meter relay as the next event. Several people help Nakatsu back into school and he insists that he’s fine. Mizuki apologizes about losing thus causing him to hurt his ankle.

Some of the group goes walking to think about who could replace Nakatsu. As they walk around they overhear the St. Blossom girls talking to a few guys from Tokyo Gakuen about the real intention of the festival. The winning team would be able to go to Tokyo Gakuen. The head of the St. Blossom girls (I don’t know this girls name, in the original it was Hibari but there’s not a Hibari in this one.) complains about getting separated from Sano if Dorm 2 loses and Kagurazaka explains that most of them don’t have a place to go after this.

The news spreads and all the dorms meet in the cafeteria. Their spirit gets low and some admit that they really don’t have a place to go. Even when injured, Nakatsu has to bring light to the situation. He encourages them not to say things like that. He begins to name all the good times all three dorms shared together. He hops his way to the front to help get his message across. But everyone else interjects with their negativity. But Mizuki comes to the rescue to support Nakatsu’s statements.

Nanba agrees with Mizuki and soon everyone is on board again and ready for the 2,000 meter relay. As everyone goes to the respective places, the question of who will run in place of Nakatsu is still in the air. Mizuki offers to run her own portion and Nakatsu’s. But surprisingly, Sano offers to fill for him instead. Everyone watches in awe as he jogs away.

The race begins on a good foot for Dorm 2. Nanba has the lead!

Dorm 3 doesn’t seem to be doing so hot. But with some encouragement (aggravation) from his team, Oscar gets back in the race.

On the pass of to the 3rd leg of the race, Dorm 2 drops the baton! Sekime apologizes and Noe quickly recovers the baton to get back in the race. Nanba realizes how this could potentially hurt their team and Sano reflects on his days as a high jumper. Mizuki assures him that no matter what she’ll make it.

When Mizuki gets the baton, she takes off and within seconds passes by Dorm 3. She stays in second as she passes the baton to Sano for the last pass off. Everyone cheers for Sano as they watch him speed down the track. (literally.) Him and the guy from Dorm 1 are neck in neck for first place as they run the last fifty. It’s so close…at the finish line….Dorm 1 takes the win!

It’s all disappointed faces for Dorm 2.But the smiles return as Nanba congratulates Sano for taking the coolest part. Sano receives many congrats and even gets tossed in the air by his fellow roomies.

After the celebration on the field is finished, another one takes place in the cafeteria. This time they look out for Sano and drink only water. But Nanba point out it’s no fun so he opts to go out and buy something else. Of course Nakao wants to follow him but he is once again rejected. One stop Nanba does make is to a florist. In a card he wishes happiness to Kanako.

Mizuki wishes everyone a goodnight and enters her and Sano’s room. Sano thanks her out of nowhere. Mizuki famous, “eh?” comes in and Sano waves it as nothing.

The next day Mizuki goes looking for Sano in the cafeteria. Nakatsu can’t help but note how cute she is after waking up. He thinks Kayashima is reading his mind when in fact, he’s not. On the other side of the cafeteria, Yuujiro runs into Mizuki and Mizuki takes the hint that it’s time for his walk. Yuujiro ends up dragging back to the field where she sees Sano practicing…his high jump.

COMMENTS:

So I like this. I really do. I like how it’s diverging yet staying somewhat true to the original and manga. First thing I have to say is Sano smiles. Like four times in this episode. I couldn’t believe it. He’s a much warmer Sano than Oguri Shun. Next, Nakatsu. I love Nakatsu. Original and this one. Maeda…ehh I’m getting there. Her acting still gets to me sometimes. This episodes you begin to see all the problems with the character and even Nakatsu starting to notice he fondness of Mizuki. For some reason this seems like a fluff episode to me. And another thing. NISHII IS FREAKING CUTE (^.^) I loooveee him much more than Ryo. He’s just a cutie! Anyway I shouldn’t rant about him.
